What is LIFI?
Home Internet What is LiFi?
What is LiFi? By Guru Being Technology.
You all must have heard about WiFi, because WiFi has become an important part of our life today. But imagine a world where Light Source can connect you to the Internet without every WiFi. You may find it fanciful to hear this technology, but technology is actually already available! It is called LiFi and is the future of wireless connectivity. In today's post, we will know what is LiFi-LiFi? And how does LiFi work?
LiFi stands for Light Fidelity and is a Wireless Optical Networking Technology that uses Light-Emitting Diodes for data transmission. In other words, it is a light-based Wi-Fi that uses light instead of radio waves to transmit information.
What is LiFi-LiFi?
LiFi or Light Fidelity is a Visible Light Communication System that transmits data through LED bulbs. The term was first coined by Professor Harald Haas, who also invented LiFi. He performed LiFi at his TED Talk in Scotland in 2011. He showed us how a light bulb can light up and communicate as well. LiFi technology is currently being developed by many organizations around the world.
How Li-Fi do work?
Now that we know, how does LiFi work?
Li-Fi and Wi-Fi are quite similar, as both are electromagnetically transmitted. Although Wi-Fi uses radio waves, Li-Fi operates on Visible Light Waves. The Li-Fi mainly consists of 3 Components Lamp Driver LED Bulb and Photo Detector with which it works. Also, apart from these three things, an internet connection will also be required.
Li-Fi, as we now know, is a Visible Light Communications (VLC) system. The LiFi internet source is connected to the Lamp Driver and the Lamp Driver transmits the information coming from the Internet cable inside the LED Bulb and then through the LED Bulb through the light, the information goes to the Photo Detector. Now the Photo Detector receives the information. The binary data converts to data and after this information is transmitted to the next device. Data transfer through light in Li-Fi Technology so the data transfer speed in Li-Fi is around 224 GBps which is many times more than the speed of WiFi.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of LiFi?
Some Advantage of LiFi:
1. Speed
Light Waves are capable of carrying far more information than Radio Waves used in Wi-Fi technology because the visible light spectrum is about 10,000 times larger than the occupied spectrum of audio waves. This is why data transmission speed in LiFi is 100 times faster than data transmission speed of Wi-Fi. LiFi connection can transmit data at a rate of 224 GB per second. At this speed, a high-definition video can be downloaded in seconds.
2. Efficiency:
LiFi Technology is based on Visible Light Technology. Nowadays LED bulbs are used in every house. With LiFi Technology, you can also access the Internet through these LED bulbs. This will save you from the extra expenses of home and office, because LiFi Technology can work without electronic devices such as routers, modems, signal repeaters, wave amplifiers and antennas.
3. Security
WiFi's Radio Waves can be intercepted by people outside your network as Radio waves can pass through walls. But Light cannot cross over the wall making LiFi more secure than other Wireless Technology.
4. Availability
Every source of Light in LiFi Technology can connect you to the Internet, so that where there will be a Light Source, the Internet can be accessed.
Some Disadvantages of LiFi:
1. Limited-Range
As we know that light cannot move from one room to another, it can be a good thing for a security but through LiFi you can access the Internet only to a limited range. This means that you can use it effectively only in closed spaces. Wi-Fi coverage can go up to 32 meters only in open places but LiFi can only go up to 10 meters.
2. Limited Compatibility
Since LiFi is a new technology, many devices are not compatible with it. Most of the devices we use to access the Internet still use hardware for Wi-Fi networking, and there is no chance that we will see LiFi enabled personal devices in the next few years.
3.No answer to slow internet speed
Speed of data transfer in LiFi is quite high, but if you are not getting good internet speed from your Internet Service Provider (ISP), then the best aspect of this technology is unimportant. It would be meaningless to deploy LiFi networks in countries where internet speed is slow.
